What Do You Know?

What Do You Know?
What Do You Know? is a short film by Colombian filmmaker Ana M Amortegui, exploring the complexity of female identity, the affects of abuse and the question that arises in women when their struggles are marginalized: "What Do You Know?"

Mia is in the last moments of her death, by suicide. We flash through moments of her life, seemingly happy, and discover them to be masks of very personal pains of abuse and heartache. The narrative, reminiscent of the style of Christopher Nolan?s Momento, begins with a girl in a bathtub. Time rewinds as the blood dripping from her hand reverses, the setting sun rises and her face awakens. During this beautiful visual, tracking the lines of her body, up to her awakening face, we flashback to memories of her life, supplemented by Mia?s own voice. It?s the voice of her pain and the wisdom of life and experience that has been cultivated by her memories we see. Each memory seemingly normal and happy defines the second act of the short. Mia explains that things are not as they seem. We explore other memories, ones of abuse and torment, each precursors to those ?happy? memories, reversed cinematically to match up with beginning frame of each of her ?happy? memories. Behind everything we see about Mia, lies a terrible truth about her existence.

In history and across the globe, women have had their lives, purposes and even definition of happiness made up for them. They?ve been told to smile and hide from any reality of life and that pain is a weakness. Some, believing they are alone, give up. This film is the voice of an artist that wants to let those women know that they are not alone. Their pain is real, understood and shared. Hopefully, with this recognition, they?ll find that life is not meant to be given up.
