The Young Ancestors

The Young Ancestors
There?s a plaque on a stone wall in an East coast town that reads; ?Sunset Hill wherein the year 1666, Gramatan, Chief of the Mohicans, sold the deed of Eastchester to the White Man.? For many Americans, Indian history is comprised of treaties and reservations. In this paradigm, history belongs to the conqueror and so the Natives Americans as a subjugated race are no longer viable. However Native Americans have never truly been defeated, because they have refused to ultimately surrender.

?The Young Ancestors? follows a group of Native American teens, who under the guidance of a mentor, are learning their native language. In a broader context this is a story of the burgeoning movement led by Native Americans to revitalize their language and culture. This is a film of courage, of hope, of the triumph of honor and respect. This is a story that needs to be shared and supported to ensure that the era of globalization does not become synonymous with the tyranny of English language and American culture, of endless strip malls and BP spills. We do not want a country or a world in which everything has become homogenized, and white washed, a place in which uniqueness and diversity have ceased to exist.
