The Ground Beneath Their Feet

The Ground Beneath Their Feet
?The Ground Beneath Their Feet? tells the story of RUQIYA and KHALIDA, two girls daydreaming about boys and marriage, until October 8, 2005 when a 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocks Northern Pakistan, and for Ruqiya and Khalida forever changes what it means to be a woman. Paralyzed in the earthquake Ruqaiya and Khalida?s story begins in the Melody Relief and Rehabilitation Center. Initially neither woman is able consider her future as they both struggle to cope with their injuries. Ruqiya tries to remain hopeful, but she tells her fianc? SALEEM that he should find another girl to marry.

Khalida is depressed: not only has she lost the use of her lower limbs, but her father was killed during the earthquake. Coming from Rangla, a mountainous region, Khalida knows that when she goes home her life will be limited to the confines of her house, and she will be dependent on others.

As the months pass, Ruqiya learns to care for herself, and through Saleem?s attentiveness she comes around to the idea of marriage: unfortunately both of their families disapprove. Her family feels that she will now be a burden on whoever cares for her, but to them she is a burden they would gladly take on. Khalida focuses on her recovery and learning self-sufficiency.

Five years after the earthquake we meet the women again. Ruqiya has moved back home, but despite her family?s attentions she is depressed. She rarely leaves home and spends most of her day watching television, or looking out at the city from her rooftop. Khalida has not returned to Rangla, but moves to the city of Muzaffarabad where she has a job, and lives in a home with other disabled women. Her new lifestyle fills her with confidence, and she starts dreaming about marriage again.
