The Coal War

The Coal War
The Coal War is the story of a symbol and a struggle: one mountain destined to be destroyed by the coal industry and a grandmother?s courageous effort to save the place she calls home.

As Massey Energy readies its bulldozers and dynamite a few hundred yards from her home, Lorelei Scarbro sets out to break the coal industry?s century-old stranglehold on Appalachia and save one of the last untouched mountains in the region, Coal River Mountain. Scarbro has launched a campaign to build a viable energy alternative to the highly destructive mountaintop removal coal mining process: the first sustainable-energy, green-collar project in the Appalachian coalfields ? a 220-turbine wind project called The Coal River Wind Farm.

While Scarbro?s innovative energy solution could save the mountain from being leveled and her home destroyed, it also has the potential to fundamentally change the coal-based mono-economy in West Virginia. If adopted, the wind farm would be a source of both sustainable energy and local jobs for as long as the wind blows. Not surprisingly, political opposition to Scarbro and her plan remains strong. West Virginia provides 14% of the United States? coal supply, and political and economic interests in the region are deeply entwined. Those interests benefit from a single energy source: coal.

The Coal War takes the viewer on an emotional journey as one woman fights to save one of the last untouched mountains in Appalachia and a threatened, uniquely American way of life.
