Tell?em Who You Are
Tell?em Who You Are is a journey through South Texas to document the loss of land and recover buried memories, memories of armed struggles by ancestors to defend against newcomers who swindled away their and livelihood, to protect land titles that proved their U.S. citizenship to a nation and a government that sought to make them second-class citizens.

Journalist Michelle Garcia returns ?home? to Texas, to the chaparral of mesquite, brush and cactus, a massive sky and small towns. As she makes a claim to her ancestral land she documents the loss of land to the Border Wall, 700 miles of metal slats the U.S. government erected on the southern border. On this journey we discover the meaning of the land, the history of a unique region and in doing so, we deconstruct walls of misunderstanding answering the question, do walls shut out or lock people inside?

We learn about our shared ancestral struggles, including armed uprising, to protect land, revealing the historical significance of land to claiming citizenship and forging identity.

We meet Eloisa Tamez a 77-year-old Army veteran wages a legal fight to preserve her three acres?held in the family for 300 years. Antonio Zavaleta?s great-grandfather led an armed revolution when the government seized Latino-owned land and instilled Jim Crowe subjugation.

Two narratives of this land emerge, to locals it?s the seeds of a rich culture, from afar it?s a lawless wasteland.
