THE MEDICINE: Science & Psychedelics

From the Swiss living room of Albert Hofmann, inventor of LSD, to ayahuasca ceremonies in the Amazon; from John Hopkins University Medical School to NYU's brain research lab - join us on this compelling investigation into the effect of psychedelic (Greek for 'mind manifest') medicine on the human mind. Psychedelic drugs cause subjective changes in perception, thoughts and emotion. The research of the 1950's & 1960's is being eclipsed by 21st century science. Breakthroughs in neuroscience have created a boom in brain research as new technology is available to study with fMRI's, PET scans, & biofeedback equipment. As neuroscience gives new understanding to the relationship between brain chemistry, electrical activity and mental function - the experiential quest for consciousness is informed by diligent scientific research.

The heart of the current research is the individual subject's experience. Research studies explore the effect of psilocybin on healthy volunteers for life enhancement; assist in providing relief from addictions; help people with end of life issues due to cancer; and treat people with post-traumatic stress disorder. With the assistance of specially trained psychotherapists who serve as guides, volunteer subjects explore personal issues. They often report transcendental experiences that change their lives. The medicines allow for deep psychological work. Early findings show they can provide faster resolution of psychological difficulties than conventional forms of therapy.
