From An Arms Length
Annie Wells: From An Arm?s Length tells the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Annie Wells who chronicled her life with a hand-held camera during her treatment for breast cancer ? in the O.R., in the chemotherapy center, beneath the radiation machine and at home. It?s a personal, moving tale that reveals the larger story of this unique character and her lifelong relationship to cancer and the BRCA2 gene mutation. Annie?s mother died of breast cancer in 1972 and her sister Betsy underwent two bouts with breast cancer and finally ovarian cancer.

When director Joan Brooker-Marks first saw Annie?s self-photography she knew immediately that it would be her next project. More than just a chance to mine a unique insight into breast cancer, there was an aesthetic to Annie?s photography that Joan thought could make for a great film. During three days of filming in New York and eleven days of filming in Los Angeles, Annie was captured in intimate interviews, showing her photojournalism and cancer work to diverse groups, and out on the street working as a photojournalist. By revealing Annie through her work and interaction with others, using her strikingly candid interviews and interweaving her photography from a career spanning more than 20 years, Annie?s cancer work takes on new depth.

When completed, Annie Wells: From An Arm?s Length will be a film that reflects Annie?s visual aesthetic and tells the story of a complex woman who accomplished something remarkable ? just like every woman who has or will ever encounter breast cancer.
